You can’t help staring.  Fort Worth artist Marshall Harris will have a collection of his large scale, graphite on mylar pieces on display during Fort Worth’s upcoming Spring Gallery Night on March 24th at The Velvet Box on Morton Street. Simply put, do not miss this!  The detail and precision in his work is beyond words. At first glance, one might think that they are a creation of black and white photography instead of meticulously created drawings. The objective in his work, in his own words, is to “persuade the observer to study an object the way I do when I’m creating my work, and it’s a way of ‘seeing’ that he or she quite possibly has never before experienced, to demand intense inspection and consideration of every nuance, the fold and flaw, bump and bruise, cut and scratch, down to the very last stitch  or hair follicle. It’s that introspection which grants relevance and realism to everything in our world.”  Without question and within seconds of seeing his work, it is clear that he meets and exceeds his objective.  Truly a treat to get to see in person. Plan on it.  Be there. Amazing art, cocktails, food & live music … yes, I think so.

What I Did

header bar

For the past several years, I have been developing a healthy addiction to yoga.  Healthy addictions, this is a subject brought to my attention many times by my yoga friend and teacher, Amber (who happens to also be an amazing writer and backbend fanatic, check out her blog here).    The practice of yoga has taught me many things and has always, even before I was consciously aware of it, been there for me to either offer comfort or a new perspective, to knock me to my knees, or even to give me a swift kick in the rear — all of this beyond the physical qualities it offers. So, when I felt the need to “take a step, any step in any direction, just take a damn step” (as I said so often to myself), I decided to deepen my practice by getting my Yoga Teacher Training certification. Another friend, yoga teacher and mentor of mine, Rebecca, had been gently nudging me to do this for quite a while before I actually went.  Her support through this process has been and is beyond measure.  (She is a self proclaimed handstand junkie and is damn good at doing them, thank you very much.  Her writing is also well worth the time to read, check it out here.)

What I Have Found Beyond Simple

header bar

I drifted away for a minute, well OK, for a few months.  I stopped to breathe.  I chose to pause and listen to my inner voice and my gut.  Ah, listening, not a strong suit of mine but, I’m getting better at it.  And, OK, maybe I didn’t exactly chose to pause and listen … honestly, the voice in my head started to nag me and my gut started to hurt. So, eventually, I got out of my own way so that I could just stop and ask, “What?!”   Yes, I asked out loud and, no, I didn’t know exactly to whom, or what for that matter, I was asking.  I just wanted an answer so that I could devise a solid, step by step plan for what to do with myself.  But, I did not get an immediate and clear answer, and I may never. The difference now is that I am ok with with that …. because I am learning how to be still and listen. I am on my path to truly finding out what really is ”beyond simple” for me … which is something I discover daily, every moment (it is, in fact, all about the journey) and I’m enjoying it.
